Keynes, Pigou and Cambridge Keynesians : authenticity and analytical perspective in the Keynes-classics debate

This book reconstructs the 'Keynes - Classics' debate about macroeconomics as one with and around the Cambridge economist A.C. Pigou. It uses biographical material as well as formal economic arguments for a new assessment of that debate. It documents Keynes' opinion that Pigovian theorizing involves 'frozen land' economics which he criticizes as being remote from all experience. The book shows that younger Cambridge Keynesian economists did not accept that criticism. It thus was not published at that time but now should be seen as an important dividing line in the development of modern macroeconomics. The book gives and discusses literary evidence that the origin of the controversial style of modern macroeconomic debate lies more with Pigou than with Keynes. It argues, however, for seeing the roots of modern macroeconomics less controversially than is customarily the case. In a final chapter the book proposes a totally new outlook on Keynes, namely as an early student of the Cambridge philosopher Ellis McTaggert.
