In 1971 E. P. Thompson published a paper in Past and Present entitled 'The Moral Economy of the English Crowd in the Eighteenth Century' which was to prove seminal in many fields of research as it fundamentally redefined the approach to the study of popular protest. impact, broadening and deepening understanding not only of eighteenth-century conflicts concerning food but also of wider issues of economic, social and political development. This collection provides both critical evaluation of the original concept and examines its application to a wide and diverse field of scholarship. It draws together specialists from social and labour history, legal history, social anthropology and historical geography to assess and advance the developing utilization of the 'moral economy' concept in different historical and societal contexts.
