Developing People's Information Capabilities: Fostering Information Literacy in Educational, Workplace and Community Contexts is Vol 8 of the well regarded Library and Information Science Series. This book hones in on accessible issues across different work and educational contexts and is of value to both academic and practitioner. This book will include chapters from well known international experts in the field of information literacy - Christine Bruce, Sam Chu, Heidi Julien, Sheila Webber, Bill Johnston and many new authors from Africa, the Far East, South America and the USA. These representatives from each continent, cover different sectors including: education, the workplace and the wider community. The contributors each provide an insight into information literacy initiatives and information capability building in the different regions and contexts. The introduction frames current practice within evolving theoretical framework that underpin these developments, providing an indication of how the field has evolved and where it is heading. It will be the first book of this kind to focus on IL research and practice with a genuine international focus, spanning different contexts. The underlying themes will be that of capability building and empowerment. Hence, it seeks to move away from instrumental and skills based views of IL towards a more enriching and holistic approach. Each chapter is built upon a critical awareness of previous research and current practice and demonstrate how theory is being applied in practice and also how practice is informing theory.
